Baseline needs assessment of integrated rural development programme at sub-district level : Sub-district Khok Charoen, Khok Charoen district, Lop Buri province [Thailand]

Following problems and expressed needs of the people under study : the problem of shortage of water sources for agriculture and consumption; the problems of land use for important economic crops and economic returns, especially rice, corn, sorghum, sesame; low product prices with high cost of factor of production; low productivity; uncertainty of farm incomes and of market for farm products; emergent pest diseases; the limited availability of suitable farm credit; the high requirements of hired labor and family labor force; low fertility of soil resources; and the problem of land tenure. The demand has called for the following development of off-farm employment opportunities and roles; and technical training programs of new practical techniques and technology. Suggestions have been focused on the following developmental prospects: expanding different water sources for agriculture and for consumption purposes in the area; increasing agricultural production efficiency and stability; promoting high potential livestock production such as native poultry raising; development of market for farm products; extending more sources for suitable farm credit; development of viable farmers' institutions to defend farmers' interests; development off-farm occupation training; development of new practical technical training programs; strengthening productive capabilities of clientele in the management and conservation of natural resources and environment including the system of fruit trees, tree crops, community forestry, and agro-forestry multiple cropping system models.
