Purpose of this research was to determine the water use efficiency and growth of 6 sesame cultivars under water deficit condition. The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, during January to April, 1997. A split plot in randomized complete block design was used with three replications. Six sesame cultivars (KKU 1, Mahasarakarm 60, KKU 3, Ubornratchatanee 1, Nakhonsawan 1 and KU 18) were considered as main-plot. The subplot were water deficit and non water deficit treatments. The results indicated that among 6 sesame cultivars, Ubonratchatanee 1 gave the highest total dry matter, seed yield as well as seed number per pod, while KKU 1 gave the lowest. Water deficit directly affected on growth and yield of sesames. Water deficit treatment gave significantly lower total dry matter, seed yield, and pod number per plant than those of non-water deficit treatments. However, water deficit treatment gave higher water use efficiency (WUE) than that of non-water deficit treatment by 51.40 percent. KU 18 had the highest WUE being greater than those of Ubonratchatanee 1, Nakhonsawan 1, KKU 3 and Mahasarakarm 60 by 12.80, 16.16, 20.20 and 43.43 percent, respectively.
