Efficacy study for the control of cotton thrips, Thrips palmi karny, on orchid flowers by dipping method in the insecticide solutions was carried out in the laboratory at DOA, Bangkok, 1999. It was a CRD design with 3 replications and 7 treatments. The treatments were imidacloprid 10 percent SL, acetamiprid 20 percent SP, abamectin 1.8 percent EC and fipronil 5 percent SC at the rate of 20 ml, 5 g, 20 ml, and 20 ml per 20 l of water respectively, compared with pyriproxyfen 10 percent EC at the rate of 20 and 40 ml per 20 l of water and untreated. For the egg test, the orchid flowers with 72 hour-old eggs were dipped in the solution of mentioned insecticides for 5 seconds, The result showed that only 13.33 percent of abamectin treated eggs could develop and hatch, the rest was dead. Other insecticides used had slightly effects on the egg development. For pyriproxyfen and untreated treatments, mortality of newly hatched nymphs were not found. For the nymphs and adults tests, the orchid flowers were dipped in the solution of insecticides for 5 seconds. The result showed that the nymphs and adults were completely killed in 48 hours in abamectin, imidacloprid, acetamiprid and fipronil, respectively. The mortality of nympha and adults were not recorded. Insecticide residues were found for acetamiprid at the amount of 2.21, 1.52, 1.45 and 1.38 ppm after treated within 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively. For fipronil the amount of 4.60, 4.44, 4.17 and 3.95 ppm after treated within 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours respectively, were found. Dipping in water after treated 6 hour could decrease the insecticide residues of acetamiprid and fipronil for 68.65 and 30.34 percent, respectively. The insecticide costs for dipping method were 3.30, 4.80, 8.50 and 9.60 baht/1,000 inflorescences in acetamiprid, fipronil, abamectin and imidacloprid respectively.
