Effect of planting dates of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) on growth and yield in corn/mungbean relay cropping under rainfed conditions in an upland area of Northeastern Thailand

Experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Khon Kaen University in 1998. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of mungbean planting dates on growth and yield in corn/mungbean relay cropping under rainfed conditions in an upland area. There were three planting dates of mungbean i.e. relay at 50, 65 and 80 days after corn emergence. The results showed that yield and yield components of corn in all relay planting dates were not significantly different. The yield was in the range of 2,113-2,131 kg/ha. Mungbean in relay cropping of 50 days gave the highest grain yield of 232 kg/ha. The corn/mungbean relay cropping resulted in 11 to 36 greater land use efficiency as compare to the sole cropping. In economic evaluation, the relay cropping treatments gave 7 to 24 percent monetary advantage over the sole corn cropping. The corn/mungbean relay cropping used as a strategy to minimize risks under the highly variable rainfall environment of the Northeastern Thailand was discussed.
