Influence of season, milk production, stage of lactation, lactation time and age of dairy cattle on subclinical mastitis

Evaluation of subclinical bovine mastitis by California Mastitis Test at Chiangmai Livestock Research and Breeding Center was performed between October 1985 and September 1989. Eighty-nine cows aged 2 years and 10 months to 10 years and 4 months were used in this study. They were in the first to seventh lactation with milk yields ranged from 1.4 up to 23.4 kilograms per day. Stage of lactation was between 1 and 18 months. The overall rate of subclinical mastitis was 38.07 percent and the highest incidence was found during the cooler months (P0.01). Low production cows (less than 5 kilograms per day) were mostly affected (P0.01). Cows with stage of lactation between 4-6 and 7-9 months were significantly affected more than those in the stage of lactation between 1-3 and above 10 months (P0.05). The older the cows, the higher the rate of subclinical mastitis (P0.05) with the highest incidence at the sixth lactation.
