This is the introduction to the series The Bio-ecology of the Khu Khut Bird Sanctuary, Lake Songkhla, southern Thailand. The studies were undertaken in the sanctuary between November 1983 and September 1988. Criteria used to select the study site are the absence of pollution, a rich abundance of flora and fauna, close proximity to the Prince of Songkla University, a high potential for experimental studies, and land which is under the jurisdiction of the Wildlife Reservation and Protection Act of the Forestry Department. The central tasks of our project are to provide basic information for proposed development in the Songkhla Lake basin and to provide academic training. The physical condition of the sites, basic methodologies, and sampling designs in the study areas are briefly described.
