Occurrence and damage of cereal leaf beetle (Oulema melanopus L.)
Stamenkovic, S.(Naucni institut za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo, Novi Sad (Serbia and Montenegro))
In 2003, the occurrence of cereal leaf beetle (Oulema melanopus L.) was more intensive than expected. Although the imagoes were observed later than expected (early April), a significant increase in the abundance was registered over the course of the growing season. Strong attacks were registered in oats and barley, and somewhat less in wheat. After the harvest of small grains, newly imagoes transferred to corn in several isolated cases, with possibility of serious damage in seed plots. On the territory of the Republic of Serbia, chemical treatments against the cereal leaf beetle were perfomed on 102,000 hectares or 18.6 of the area under small grains. The treatments included large area in the central part of the Republic (about 84,000 ha or 20.9) and limited areas in the public sector of the Vojvodina Province (around 19,000 ha or 12.5). There are multiple choices for the control of cereal leaf beetle imagoes and larvae. It is important that the control is timely and thorough. Imagoes should be suppressed at densities of 8-15 individuals per square meter, before massive oviposition. If imagoes cannot be controlled, it is possible to suppress larvae. Preferably, early-instar larvae (1st-2nd) should be controlled, before they cause significant damage (one or two larvae per plant). Late-instar larvae (3rd-5th) are more difficult to control because they are shrouded in a mucous layer.
