Microbiological activity in compacted and loose soil

Soil is inhabited by various microbial species whose activity contributes to the development and maintenance of soil fertility. In recent time, however, use of heavy machinery has led to the damaging of soil structure and hence soil microbial activity itself. Our paper discusses the effects of soil compaction on soil microbial activity. Soil compaction is shown to have increased the abundance of denitrifiers and decreased overall microbial abundance and the number of ammonifiers, actinomycetes, fungi, ureolytic microorganisms, azotobacters, oligonitrophilous bacteria and dehydrogenase, protease and urease activity.
