The venom of Echis carinatus causes rapid intra-arterial clotting of blood, resulting in the death of small animals; death occurs in larger animals and in man, due to depletion of fibrinogen reserves, which leads to internal haemorrhage. The aqueous extracts of 4 African plants (Schumanniophyton magnificum bark of Nigerian origin, and the leaves of Mucuna pruriens var. utilis, Strophanthus gratus and Strophanthus hispidus, collected from Ghana), used to treat snakebites, exhibited a dose-dependent ability to prolong the time taken for human blood to clot following treatment with E. carinatus venom. The extract of Strophanthus hispidus was the most potent inhibitor.
