In traditional medicine, M. [Millettia] thonningii is used as a laxative, blood purifier, dewormer and analgesic, and to treat diarrhoea. The petrol extract of the root bark of M. thonningii (collected from Ghana) afforded beta-amyrin, O,O-dimethylalpinumisoflavone, and the new compounds 5-O-methyl-4'-O-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-alpinumisoflavone and thonninginisoflavone. Their structures were determined from spectral data and chemical interconversions. The absolute configuration of thonninginisoflavone was established by chiroptical studies. The crude extract was active in the brine shrimp [Artemia salina] lethality bioassay (LD50 value of 100 p.p.m.).
