Chemical characteristics of charcoals from some Ghanaian hardwoods

There is little information on the chemical characteristics of charcoal from Ghanaian hardwoods. With the introduction of industries based on charcoal in the country such as the iron and gun poeder industries, such information is necessary. The Forestry Research Institute of Ghana has therefore, been working in this direction and had conducted studies on production of charcoal from Ghanaian hardwoods. This paper discusses the results gathered from the analysis of the products from such studies. The studies found out that the resort method of carbonising wood was the best and the charcoals obtained from this method is suitable for recreational, domestic and industrial use.
