Forest land use options: conflicts and solutions.

Nineteen papers by various authors are presented from this conference organized by the British Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Forestry, the Forestry Department and the Ministry of the Environment, Ghana, and sponsored by the UK ODA, the Ghana Timber Millers Association, the Association of Ghana Timber Industries, the Forest Products Inspection Bureau and the Ghana Chamber of Mines. The papers cover land use options in Ghana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Malawi. Aspects include: sustainable forest management; logging, forest values and sustained growth in the timber industry; local community involvement in natural resource management; the contribution of non-wood forest products to forest resource conservation and economic development; wildlife and multiple forest land use planning; joint forest management; bush fires, sustainability and land use; mobilizing rural communities for tree planting; land tenure and forest management; mineral exploitation and the environment; mining and forest land use; and biodiversity in development and conservation.
