Limiting nutrients for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) on a regosol of Central Java

A glasshouse pot experiment was conducted to assess mineral nutrient status of a Regosol from Central Java, for the growth of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), using the nutrient omission method. The most limiting mineral nutrient was nitrogen, followed by phosphorus. There was a tendency for dry matter yield to be limited by shortages of molybdenum, copper, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. Dry matter yields of tops at 42 days after planting without applications of N, P, Mo, Cu, K, Mg, and Zn were respectively 22, 51, 71, 80, and 88 percent of that in the complete nutrient treatment. The development of flower buds was completely suppressed by deficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus, and greatly inhibited by shortages of molybdenum, copper, potassium and magnesium.
