Evaluation of menthol and mentha oil as potato sprout inhibitors

Efficacy of volatile monoterpene menthol and its natural source mentha oil was studied for inhibition of potato sprouting during storage in a store with passive evaporative cooling (17-30?C, 75-95%RH). Different methods and duration of application were evaluated. Treatments with mentha oil were more effective than all comparable treatments with menthol. All dip as well as vapour treatments with mentha oil and only vapour treatment with menthol significantly reduced the sprouting of tubers till 100 days of storage. All treatments in general, reduced the sprout growth however, rotting of tubers was increased in some of the treatments after 80 days. Dip treatment induced depressions on tubers, hence only vapour treatment of tubers was finally evaluated for confirmation. All treatments with menthol and mentha oil significantly reduced the sprouting and sprout growth of tubers as compared to control without any increase in cottage of tubers till 100 days of storage. However, treatment with mentha oil for 10 days increased the rottage of tubers after 80 days of storage.
