Introducing foreign genes into potato genome using Agrobacterium tumefaciens, potato has long been a favorite crop among genetic engineers. Several diseases, insect pests and abiotic stresses affect potato cultivation. Attemptsm have, therefore, been directed world over to develop transgenic potatoes tolerant to these stresses. Global change in potato consumption pattern and rise of processed potato products in international market have compelled potato breeders and genetic engineers to develop varieties having better storage and processing qualities. Public-funded research institutions and private firms of developed countries in America nd Europe are conducting such types of researches. An analysis of 77 patent applications on genetically - modified potatoes filed during last one decade indicates dominance of private firms in this field. The private dominance is mainly due to possibility of using these technologies in a number of other commercial crops. Field tests of transgenic potatoes have been reported in the United States, Canada, European Union member countries, Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, India, Mexico, Peru, Russia, South Africa and Ukaraine.
