Urbanization vis-a-vis runoff yield - A case study
2003
Sharma, K.D. (Central Research Institute of Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad (India))
Himayatsagar and Osmansagar reservoirs, the main drinking water supply sources for the Hyderabad City, are threatened with reduced inflows due to biotic interference in their catchments. An analysis of annual rainfall-runoff data over past 36 years (1961-96)revealed three distinct decreasing flow regimes with increasing rainwater abstraction within the catchment. The runoff-rainfall ratio reduced from 0.08-0.13 to 0.04-0.08,threshold rainfall rainfall increased by threefold and runoff efficiency declined by one-third to two-third.With the current rate of biotic interference in the catchments these reservoirs will not receive any inflow by the next 30 to 50 years. The remedial measures with the immediate effect include protection of perennial vegetation cover, and restriction on cultivation and construction of runoff diversion/retaining structures within the catchments.
