Water content and opening rate of the intertacheal bordered pit in heartwood were investigated in seven sugi clones, Aya, Inn, Kijin, Maaka, Kumotoshi and Sanbu, to explain the hereditary effect causing heartwood blackening in this species. High heartwood moisture content was found in the sugi clones, Yabukguri, Kijin and Kumotoshi. The moisture content exceeded 100% in most heartwood, and was over 200% in a sample of Kumotoshi. The heartwood with high moisture content tended to be blackened. Intertracheal bordered pits were opened frequently in heartwood with the higher moisture contents but were generally closed in noramal heartwood. Therefore, increased moisture content in heartwood may be related to the high opening rate of intertracheal pits observed in some sugi clones.
