1. In the growing district of naked barley in Kagawa Prefecture, since the growth disturbance accompanied with leaf dyingIsymptom occurred, the cause was investigated from the side of both view points of physiological disturbances and soil-borne diseases. 2. The symptom is that the growth is inferior in the tillering stage, and leaf dying appears at around the start of jointing, and the plant length and number of tillers are extremely inferior, and the stem is short and number of ears becomes less, and the yield is reduced by half. 3. Because the symptom is not changed even if the soil of the damaged field is steam sterilized, soil-borne diseases are not participated in. 4. The soil pH of field is so low as less than 4.5, where the degree of leaf dying is higher. 5. By making soil pH to upward at the damaged field, the degree of leaf dying becomes slightly, and by getting down the soil pH at healthy field, leaf dying is reproduced. 6. As for the relation between soil pH with occurrence of disturbances, the disturbance is conspicuous at below pH 4.5, and atI around pH 5.0, the influence on the growth and yield is smaller even though a slight leaf dying is sometimes appeared, and the disturbance does not occur over 5.7. 7. As the measures, it is effective to upward soil pH to around 5.5 by applying liming materials.
