Our new yam small mass production method greatly reduced the necessary seed yams. This method includes ; 1) Cutting a yam into small divisions with skin (over 3 g each)and cultivating them on the field with 5 to 7cm intrarow spaces produced yam smalls (over 10 g each) in the first year. 2) Cultivated with their apical buds in the second year, all the yam smalls germinated simulteniously. The yield of this method (using 3 g divisions) was not less than that of the normal method (using 50 g divisions). 3) Laying the yam smalls' apical buds produced good-shaped yams. 4) Using yam smalls with their apical buds saved plural buds removing work. 5) This mthod (using 3 g divisions) required only 14 kg/10a seed yams, campared with 240 kg/10a seed yams required by the nomal method (using 50 g divisions).
