"Sugar beet cultivation in Hokkaido is required to save labor and reduce cost, for the reason that aging of farmers, expansion of farmland and competition with imported sugar. In order to cope with these problems, introduction of direct sowing cultivation with narrow row is considered. In this study, we examined what kind of yielding type sugar beet varieties were suitable for direct sowing cultivation with narrow row. 1. Direct-sowing cultivation with narrow row increased sugar content, and decreased impurity index. As a result, increase of corrected sugar content was confirmed clearly. 2. All of the harmful non-sugar ingredients, Na, K and amino-N decreased. Especially the decrease of Na was remarkable. 3. Increase of sugar content and decrease of impurity index were remarkable in 'NZ type' varieties, those sugar content was slightly higher and root weight was as much as 'Monohomare', like 'Hokkai No.77'. However these effects were not so clear in 'NE type' varieties like 'Kabutomaru'. Therefore, we estimated that 'NZ type' varieties were suitable for direct sowing cultivation with narrow row."
