"An experiment was conducted to examine the initiation time and duration of beta - estradiol (E2)treatment for feminization of flounder, Paralicthys olivaceus. E2 was orally administrated to fish for different terms (E2 concentration was 5 microg/g diet). The results obtained were as follows. The shortest duration of E2 administration to attain a complete feminization was from 36 days after hatching (15.6 +- 1.2mm in T.L.) to 75 days after hatching (73.2 +- 4.0mm in T.L.). When the treatment was initiated from 55 days after hatching (33.9 +- 4.7mm in T.L.), the ratio of female was 96%. And when terminated at 60 days after hatching (46.7 +- 5.4mm), the ratio of female was 80%. These values were much higher than that in contorol (19.6%). E2 affected on gonad, liver and kidney of fish. And survival rates in the groups treated with E2 were lower than that in control. Especially survival rate was the lowest in the group where the fishes were exposed to the longest E2 treatment (from 15.1 +- 1.4mm in T.L. to 84.9 +- 10.5mm in T.L.)."
