"We researched the effect of successive organic matter applications to paddy fields on soil properties and productivity of rice over 11 years.(1) Composted organic matter applications of 2 t/10a/year increased the thickness of the plowed layer. But the bulk density and the porosity did not change between 0 t and 2 t of composted organic matter applications. (2) The rice yield from compost applications during the first 3 years, was higher than without compost application. After 4 years the difference in rice yield decreased between continuous compost applications of 1-2 t/10a/year and no compost. (3) With application of crop residue (rice straw), the content of soil organic matter was maintained without compost application. The content of soil organic matter increased with compost application of 1-2 t/10a during the first 6 years. But after 7 years, the content of soil organic matter did not increase with the continuous application of compost."
