Moriguchi, K., Suzuki, Y., Gotou, J., Inatsuki, H., Shiraishi, Y., Yamaguchi, T., and Ohara, T. : Temporal Changes in Water Content of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) Logging Residue Stacked along Forest Roads. J. Jpn. For. Soc. 86: 93 - 97, 2004 We investigated temporal changes in water content over four years in logging residue dumped along forest roads, in sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) man-made forests at Kahoku-town, Kochi, Japan, through collecting samples of different post-logging years. Only discarded trunks were investigated among the logging residue. The objective of this investigation was to obtain basic data on woody biomass that could be used as a clean energy source. Two-factor ANOVA (years post-logging * location within residue stack) indicated that the water content of residue at the bottom of the stack increased over time, while remaining constant in other parts of the stack. We recommend that logging residue be gathered soon after logging when it is to be burned as. an energy source.
