This study attempts to look at some of the factors involved in the joint indigenous forest conservation in Kenya that can result in positive or negative impacts on sustainable forest conservation. The factors explored by the study include present policy and legislation, land tenure, cost and benefits of conservation, institutional considerations, indigenous knowledge, the farming systems, marketing of non-timber forest products, gender issues and promotion of out-of-forest activities. Finally an attempt is made to assess how remote sensing and GIS can contribute to joint forest conservation with the forest-adjacent communities through the integration of socio-economic and biophysical data collected using participatory rural appraisal techniques.
