Establishment of trees from the seedlings is the most critical phase in afforestation. The seedlings are prone to environmental and biotic factors such as water stress, nutrient deficiencies and or toxicities, pests and diseases as a result of their fragile nature. Because of this, fertilizer application in the nursery is necessary as it ensures a faster take off and survival of these tree seedlings. Phosphate rocks have been identified as cheap substitutes of soluble phosphate fertilizers for low pH and low calcium soils. It is hoped that this study will generate some highlights, which could be used as a base for establishing legumes and non-legumes on farming systems of Eastern and Western Kenya by inoculating with rhizobium and mycorrhizae and fertilizing with this cheap and locally available Minjingu phosphate rock as a source of P. This study was initiated at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) to evaluate the effect of phosphate rock fertilization on growth and P uptake of six commonly grown tree species on two Kenyan acid soils.
