Conservation status of mopane woodlands in Malawi: a case study of Mua-Tsanya Forest Reserve

A study to determine the current status of mopane woodland conservation in Malawi showed that it is endangered. Increased human population and over dependence on natural resources for firewood, building materials, tool handles, wood for charcoal making and carvings, and other non-woody products, such as medicine, food, fodder, etc, are the major causes of deforestation of mopane woodlands. Although mopane woodlands are protected by the forestry legislation, this has not been successfully executed due to lack of a general environmental legislation on biodiversity conservation. For maximum protection of the total biodiversity of Mopane woodlands, a general environmental framework should be established. All legislation that impinges on the environment should be reviewed to reflect new environmental needs. A brief overview of bottlenecks concerning the conservation of mopane woodlands such as demographic, poverty and legislative problems is given.
