Forest genetic resources (FGR) are part of the wealth and diversity of plant and animal life. However, biodiversity is under continuing threat from habitat loss, overexploitation and the erosion of genetic resources. Technological advances and the increasing monetary value that is assigned to genetic resources, particularly within the biodiversity-rich developing countries, have increased the conflicts over rights and responsibilities for these resources.
