Genetic markers can be used to identify and describe the genetic diversity and structure of forest tree species and their populations. Such information can be used to develop appropriate conservation strategies and improve the sustainable utilization of forest genetic resources (FGR). Genetic markers can be derived form a variety of sources, the most commonly used being isozyme and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based approaches derived from proteins and DNA, respectively. This paper examines both these sources of genetic markers, their characteristics, their applicability to the questions posed in FGR conservation, an the problems with their use.
