A summary report on the status of the non-wood forest products in Kenya

This is an abstract on the state of non-timber forest products in Kenya. It is based on a survey on the production and marketing of these products here in Kenya, which was carried out by Vomigel Ltd. According to the survey, non-timber forest products (NWFPs) play an important role in Kenyas economy, generating about USD 40 million annually. The survey also found that NWFPs are used for different purposes widely in Kenya, both at the household level and in industry, directly and indirectly. The survey also found out that there are many players active in the NWFPs sector, both government and non-government involved in different aspects of the conservation, management and exploitation of NWFPs and their trade. Most of the production, processing and marketing is done in an uneconomical way and practical strategies to address these issues have not been developed. All these issues including some information on some specific NWFPs is discussed, with data collected from various institutions.
