A retrospective longitudinal study were explored in 1997-2001 and include regions from all 10 Lithuanian counties. It was the objective to estimate incidence risk of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) infection in different age group among the dairy cattle from intensive cattle breeding companies and the breeding bulls from Artificial Insemination (AI) Centers. Additionally, different demographic risk factors for occurrence of BVDV infection from differently sized cattle herds consisted of cattle breeding companies and small family farms were estimated. A total 4 098 blood sera samples were investigated. A general trend was determined that the younger (aged 1 - 4 years) animals were subject to a greater risk of infection. Annual incidence risk was 0.28 - 0.36, while animals older than 4 years have shown two times lower value, 0.13 - 0.18, respectively. Analysis of the effect of the herd size as demographic risk factor on the seroprevalence of BVDV has revealed that in the large herds the number of seropositive animals was on the average two - fold higher compared to the small herds. Analysis of the influence of animal age on the prevalence of BVDV infection has shown that in third and consecutive years of life the number of seropositive animals increases reaching its maximum in the age groups 5 - 7 and 7 years.
