A complete diallel cross experiment was conducted to obtain geneticinformation on fibre length and strength of Gossypium hirsutum L. Jointregression analysis showed the full adequacy of data for fibre lengthand strength. The Vr/Wr graphs showed that fibre length and fibrestrength were influenced by additive type of gene action with partialdominance. The unit slope of regression lines for fibre length (b = 1.06plus minus 0.24) and fibre strength (b = 1.13 plus minus 0.20) suggestedthe absence of epitasis. It was revealed that GFS had maximum numberof dominant genes for fibre length and NIAB-999 for fibre strength, asthese varieties are present near to the origin. Tashkant-7 containedmaximum number of recessive genes for fibre length and S-12 for fibrestrength, as these are present farthest from the origin. The estimates ofnarrow-sense heritability (h2 n.s) suggest that both pedigree andrecurrent selection method may be useful to effect improvement in fibrelength and fibre strength.
