The cultivation of chickling vetch as a vegetable began in Poland not earlier than in 1991. In cooperation with a breeding company Spojnia (Nochowo), two original cultivars, Derek and Krab, with a traditional seed phenotype entered in the Register of Original Vegetable Cultivars of COBOR in 1998, were created. While analysing local populations from the Podlasie region, mutated genes with attractive round seeds were selected in 1992. The multiplied and selected material was submitted to biometric measurements. It is concluded that homozygotic plants with round seeds can be precious introductory materials for the cultivation of an original cultivar which would be attractive to the food industry (e.g. canned food and extrudates) and valuable in household (such as sprouts and vegetable salads)
