A study of the biomass properties and combustion quality of 15 Miscanthus genotypes was carried out on samples from a field trial that was realised in the Alentejo region/South Portugal, from March 1997 till February 2000. This study also assessed the effect of harvest delay from October/November to January/February on the same biomass properties and quality for combustion. The genotypes used belong to the following groups: M. x giganteus, M. sacchariflorus, M. sinensis hybrid and M. sinensis. The biomass properties studied were: proportion of stems and leaves, water content, ash content and chemical elemental composition (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, S and Cl). For the 15 genotypes harvest delay led to a decrease in the proportion of leaves in htebiomass, to lower water and ash contents, and to a general decrease in the amount of the chemical elements analysed. The genotypes of the groups M. x giganteus and M. sacchariflorus show a better combustion quality of the biomass due to a lower ash content and more favourable chemical composition
