Natural and agrotechnical factors in potato growing in South-West Poland
2001
Chmura, K.
The aim of agrotechnical experiments was to determine the prospects for potato cultivation of South-West Poland, under various natural and agrotechnical conditions. Due to the great soil and climatic diversity of the region, the following 3 cultivation regions were delimited: a region with prevailing soil rye complexes (north-west part) denoted by Z, a region with dominant soil wheat complexes (sout-east part) - P and with mountain soil complexes (south west-part) - G. The years were classified into 5 groups with respect to the precipitation total during the most intensive potato growth (dry, medium dry, average, medium wet, wet). The numerous cultivars (74) in the experiments were collected into 4 groups with respect to vegetation length (early, medium early, medium late, late). The bulb yield and starch content as dependent on various natural and agrotechnical factors were compared using statistical methods, i.e. variance analysis and regression analysis. Summing up, it seems that best natural conditions for potato growing occur in the south-east part (region P) where wheat complexes dominate and in mountain valleys (region G)
