The purpose of the First International Symposium on Domestication of the Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus thynnus thynnus (DOTT), organised in Cartagena, Spain, on 3-8 February 2002, was to exchange information on the state of the art of the BFT fisheries biology, physiology and farming, socio-economic aspects of moving towards mass culture of BFT, and integration of the fishing industry into the domestication drive. The formation of working groups was also envisaged in specific areas such as: genetics, reproduction control, larval rearing, nutrition, disease control, husbandry, engineering, handling, socio-economics and environmental impacts. The symposium was attended by 178 experts from 23 countries. The present publication presents the proceedings of this symposium and includes 23 short manuscripts based on the presentations, both oral and posters, from the meeting. It also includes the main resolutions and strategies discussed and agreed by the working groups.
