In a previous work, we produced a random population of transformed rice plants from 95 independent clones to assess the effect of flanking tobacco Rb7 and yeast ARS1 matrix attachment regions (MARs) on the behavior of the gusA reporter gene over two generations. We examined the relationship among the transgene copy number, rearrangement levels, inheritance patterns, expression levels, and stability and plant fertility for both the selectable marker gene (aphIV) and the unselected reporter gene (gusA). This has allowed a better understanding of the "average" transgene behavior in a large random population of transgenic rice plants produced by particle bombardment.
