Genetic basis of F1 hybrid sterility and gamete formation in rice

The genetic basis of F1 hybrid sterility was compared in inter- and intraspecific crosses using near-isogenic lines (NILs). Although F1 hybrid semisterility is frequently caused by allelic interaction in interspecific crosses, the genic actions were divergent. The gamete eliminator, S6, was detected in three strains of Oryza rufipogon. S6 caused abortion of both female and male gametes carrying S6-a from japonica rice only in the heterozygote. S6-n, which induces no infertility in combination with S6 and S6-a, was widely ditributed in wild strains as well as indica type. Another gamete eliminator, S1, was detected in O. glaberrima: S1 behaved like S6. To compare the genic effects by gamete eliminator (S1 and S6), histological investigations were carried out. Results showed that S1 caused abnormal divisions in both mega- and microgametogenesis, however, S6 caused abnormalities only in megasporogenesis. Duplicate gametic lethal genes proposed for varietal crosses within O. sativa were also reexamined. Three NILs showed only pollen infertility when crossed with the recurrent parent, however, an F1 between the NILs gave reduced spikelet infertility, suggesting that the accumulation of F1-pollen-semisterility genes affected female fertility.
