The paper presents a vision for generating a national desertification research strategy (NDRS) conceptualized from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). It concisely outlines the environmental setting of the contry, the magnitude of desertification, and its impact particularly on food security. The need for NDRS is prompted by, inter alias, lack of human and institutional capacity. It is visualized that the ultimate aim of research on desertification is the promotion of sustainable development at the local level. It is envisaged that NDRS should be formulated from the National Action Programme as related to the research and technology part of. the comprehensive national strategy of the relevant sectors. The proposed research strategy was generated from four sources namely: the six programme areas recommended by Chapter 12 Agenda 21, Articles 10 and 17 and 8 (Annex 1) of the UNCCD, the Comprehensive National Strategy, and the Sudan National Action Programme. Smoe of the main research themes to be addressed in each of the recommended areas for combating desertification are presented. The list is not exhaustive and other papers will complement these themes
