Desertification is recognized globally as a complex problem as it embraces the interactiions of biological, ecological, and socioeconomic dimensioons. It is not just a process of soil erosion but potential genetic erosion of the plants, animals and microorganisms that form the living elements of the dryland environments. Desertification is considered the most serious environmental problem facing the Sudan and affecting the country's development. There are many examples whereby drought and desertification in the Sudan have caused loss of biodiversity and ultimately jeopardized food security. Desertification is not onlly thereatening the agricultural base of production but also the existence of the livelihood of the people and social fabric of the communities. It is therefore imperative that conservation of biodiversity for sustainable development in the drylands of the country adopts a strategy of research that is holistic when dealling with the causes, impacts and remedies of desertification. This, however, cannot be achieved unless sound research strategies and mechanisms to protect these drylands from threats imposed by desertification are developed and implemented. For meaningful research activities and better results there are many limitations and shortcomings that need to be overcome. If the major goal is to promote research on combating desertification and conserving biodiversity, it becomes essential to consider themes that amalgamate the issues incommon. It is also of paramount importance that the two National Action Plans (NAPs), of desertification and biodiversity be coordinated, harmonized and integrated.
