Formulation of antifungal cream from Thai medicinal plants

Various medicinal plants were used for treatment of fungal dermatitis. However, there are some disadvantages of utilizing them such as convenient and uniformity of active principles. The purpose of this study is to investigate an antifungal activity of five Thai medicinal plants and incorporate the most active extract into cream bases. The plants, Alpinia galanjga, Boesenbergia pandurata, Chromolaena odorata, Senna alata, and Orthosiphon grandiflorus were extracted with hexane, ichloromethane, 95 percent ethanol and water. All extracts were evaporated under reduced pressure at temperature not over 50 deg C and tested for their activities against Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum gypseum and Epidermophyton floccosum (clinical strains) by diffusion method. The results showed that only Alpinia galanga extracts (AGEs) had an antifungal activity against all of fungi. MICs of AGEs were further determined by dilution method. Hexane extract of this plant showed the highest potency and was selected for cream formulation in the concentration of 0.1 and 1.0 percent w/w. The preparation evaluation showed that all of them have satisfactory physical properties, stability and exhibited antifungal activity against all fungi.
