Learning interactions between community and school

Main objective of this research was to examine the nature and condition of interactions of learning process between community and school. The study was designed to achieve theoretical generalization that would lead to a grounded theory by means of qualitative research. In order to gain understanding of the phenomena, the researcher had done a number of indepth interviews with key informants including school administrators, community leaders, teachers, school board members and parents of whom were selected by means of theoretical sampling. The study found that there were three learning patterns in the school including one way learning or teacher centered learning, standardization learning or uniformity learning and transactional learning. Two learning patterns were conditioned by the centralization of educational bureaucratization of school administration and management. There were four aspects of learning process in the community: 1) the system of knowledge in various dimensions of community life including rice growing, food gathering, basketing, weaving, seedling, and herbal medicine; 2) the accumulation and diffusion of knowledge through families and kins, community leaders, verbal communications, group interactions, written materials and other community activities; 3) the institutions transfering knowledge including family temple, and local wisdom; and 4) the creation and modification of knowledge.
