Histological changes in integumentary, digestive, excretory and respiratory system of Oreochromis niloticus L. induced by sublethal concentration of crude water extract of Brassaia actinophylla Endl.

Histological changes in skin, intestine, liver, kidney and gill of the Nile tilapia fingerling (Oreochromis niloticus L.) after exposure to crude water extract of leaves of Brassaia actinophylla Endl. at the sublethal concentration (9.00 mg/l) for 12 weeks were studied. The results showed histological changes in different organs. The mucous cells of epidermis of skin were increased in number and size. The erosion of mucosa in microvilli, shrinkage of lamina propria and increase in size and number of mucous cells were apparent in the intestine. The blood vessels at submucosa and muscularis were severely dilated. In the liver, there was blood congestion in central vein and sinusoid, sinusoid dilation and cell necrosis near blood vessels. There were glomerulus contraction and blood congestion, tubular necrosis in proximal tubules in the kidney tissues. In addition, histological changes were found as follow : gills were disarray of gill lamellae, hyperplasia of gill filament epithelium, epithelial cells lifting of gill lamellae, the tips of gill lamellae were swollen and gill lamellae were fused.
