Cultivation of the microalga Dunaliella salina (Chlorophyceae) for beta-carotene production

Dunaliella salina strain DS91008 was isolated from salt pond in Samutsongkhram Province. The culture was grown in J/1 culture medium with three different NaCl concentrations (10, 20 and 30 percent NaCl), at 25,000 lux light intensity. The result showed that with increasing salinity the growth rate of D. salina decreased with an increased in accumulation of total carotenoid. At 30 percent NaCl total carotenoids content was 80.4 micro g/10**(6) cells. The total carotenoid:chlorophyll-a ratio was 8.8:1. The pigment of D. salina constituted mostly of beta-carotene.
