Study components for soil and water conservation cropping patterns on the steepland

Study of screening of components for soil and water conservation cropping patterns on the steepland was conducted during 1990-1993. The kinds of cover crops (Leguminoseae.) for soil and water conservation cropping system, the kinds of perennial shrubs (Legumino seae.) and grasses for established on buffer strips were studies. The result showed that cover crops for soil and water conservation cropping system on the steepland should be alley cropping (corn as main crop), it should be planted cover crops 2-4 weeks after planted main crops, but everage yield of upland rice those planted follow continue 3 years in the saem cover crops' plots was not effected by cover crops' planting date. Phaseolus calcaratus and Mucuna pruriens produced the best results; they gave upland rice's yield those planted follow higher than upland rice's yield those planted follow pegion pea of 33 and 29 percent respectively. Gliricidia sepium and Cassia floribunda were showed the best results for establishing on buffer strips; they produced high dry matter (branches' pruning for cover the ground); tolerance to unsuitable environments; and rapid in growth. Brachiaria ruzisiensis and Setaria ancept were suitable for establishing on buffer strips when the farmers wanted grasses to feed animals during dry season; Paspalum notatum was good for grown fruit tree on buffer strips; because it rather slowly growth.
