Genetic control of 3 lipoxygenase isozymes was studied from 6 crosses made between the cultivar NS1 and 6 soybean lines lacking the isozymes, viz. PI 133226 (L-1 null), C1-89GH (L-2 null), PI 205085 (L-3 null), A1-89GH (L-2, L-3 null), B1-89GH (L-1, L-3 null) and F4-all null line. Another cultivar, SJ4, was also crossed with the all null line. Individual F3 seeds from heterozygous F2 plants of each of the 7 crosses were detected for the presence or absence of the isozymes by spectrophotometric monitoring of the formation of lipohydroperoxide products. The results showed that distribution of F3 progeny seeds for the presence of L-1, L-2 and L-3 isozyme by dominant alleles Lx1, Lx2 and Lx3, respectively, while the absence is controlled by lx1, lx2, and lx3. There was a tight linkage between the lx1 and lx2 loci, but both are independent of lx3 locus. The results of the study allowed selection of 5 all null lines from the NS1 cross and 4 all null lines from the SJ4 cross. They will be employed in developing soybean lines with no lipoxygenase to reduce green beany flavor.
