Insect antifeedants from Thai mangrove plants

As part of a search for agrochemicals from Thai mangrove plants, the crude extract of the seeds of Xylocarpus granatum and that of the heartwoods of Xylocarpus molluccensis revealed attractive preliminary antifeedant results against Galleria mellonella. The separation of both crude extracts led to the isolation of three active limonoids, two from X granatum and the other from X. molluccensis. By means of physical properties, chemical reactions and spectroscopic data, those limonoids were identified as 7-oxo-7-deacetoxygedunin, xyloccensin K (a new naturally occurring limonoid) and angustidienolide. The antifeedant activity of these limonoids against Galleria mellonella was found to be 80.69, 66.29 and 64.70 percent, respectively at dose level 4 mg.
