An outline review is given of our present understanding of natural regeneration of indigenous trees in Southern Africa, in the context of priority issues of conservation. The urgent need for more information can best be addressed by greater study of existing documentation and experience, to which an introduction is provided. The significance of forest and woodland ecosystems underground is stressed, and aspects of forest pathology are included for their potential relevance to problems of both natural and artificial regeneration. Generalising on the nature and merits of indigenous trees should be avoided. In considering the difficulties and prospects of dealing with decline of the Zambezi teack (Baikiaea) forests and woodlands, there is in fact already enough knowledge and experience to channel scarce resources of research and management towards enhancing natural regeneration, and away from repeating efforts to establish plantations of species biologically unsuited to domestication.
