Indigenous species trials established upon the Kalahari sands of North-western Matebeleland between 1926 and 1989: A summary

Modern management history in this region began in 1920, with emphasis upon yield regulation and fire protection. Small trials of potential plantation species were established, including a one-tenth acre (0.04ha) plot of Baikiaea plurijuga on Fuller Fiorest South of Victoria Falls in 1926. This was followed by a one acre (0.4 ha) successful planting of the same species at Igusi Siding north-west of Bulawayo in 1929. Other small plots were sown or planted between 1965 and 1989 on Fuller, Ngamo, Gwayi, Gwampa and Umgusa Forests mostly using Baikiaea, but also including Guibourtia coleosperma, Pterocarpus angolensis, Ricinodendron rautanenii and a number of other Kalahari Sands tree and shrub species. Survivirs were located and measured in 1991. Results showing height and diameter growth are presented and compared, and some management implications aoutlined.
