The aim of "green" certification is to evaluate forest management practices and the resultant products against a set of standards that reflect sustainability. Green sertification of tropical, temperate and boreal commercial foresta by use of ecolabels, seals of approval, single attribute certificates or report cards is receiving great attention and beingn implemented at both international and national levels. However, the cvurrent certification criteria and indicators do not cater for social forests in rural settings where emphasis is on social rather than commercial benefits. The objective of this paper is to present a set of criteria and indicators for the conservation and sustainable management of social forests in the rural areas of the dry tropics of Africa which can serve as a "soft policy tool" meant to supplement conventional forest laws and regulations.
