Prvenance and progeny testing in eucalyptus camaldulensis in Zimbabwe

Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. was introduced into Zimbabwe before the turn of the century and has become the most widely planted exotic tree in the country. It is regarded as the most reliable eucalypt for planting in the parts of Zimbabwe, but poor stem form has restricted its use to small woodlots for shade , shelter, fuelwood, short posts, etc. In 1965/66 replicated provenance trials of a range-wide collection of Australian seedlots were planted at three dry-zone sites. Only one of these experiments has been the subject of studies on coppice development. It was felled in 1973 and assessments were made on the resultant coppice at age 5I/2 years from felling. The results of earlier assessments in the seedling trees of the original trials were used to develop a breeding programme of E. camaldulensis, which has just entered its third generation. A second-generation progeny test was assessed at age 31/2 years.
